Day 1: Arrival to Algiers
Upon our arrival in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, we will be greeted at the airport and transferred to our hotel for an afternoon check-in. After the long flight, the remainder of the day is at our leisure to relax and unwind. Algiers, originally known as Al-Jaza’ir, is nestled into the Sahel hills, extending for ten miles along the Bay of Algiers on the Mediterranean coast. Its coastal location made it an ideal site for the pirate stronghold it became in 1529 when the pirate “Redbeard” expelled the Spaniards from Penon Island, subsequently taking control of the city for the Ottoman Empire. The city’s richly layered architecture reflects its eventful history, with traces of French colonization from 1830 to 1962, leaving behind grand French-built boulevards, elegant apartments, villas, socialist-era monuments, and public buildings. Algiers also retains its enduring Islamic heartland, nestled within the steep hillside Kasbah. Tonight, we will enjoy a welcome dinner, featuring traditional cuisine accompanied by an Arab-Andalusian musical troupe.

In the afternoon, we visit the symbolic Martyr’s Monument, an iconic concrete monument commemorating Algeria’s war for independence, and its adjacent museum. The monument was inaugurated in 1982 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Algeria’s independence.
